Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22
"Fathers, yours is an eternal calling from which you are never released... its importance transcends time. It is a calling for both time and eternity." -Ezra Taft Benson
The great Patriarchs continued to counsel their children after they were grown and married:
*Lehi counseled and blessed each of his children and grandchildren before he passed away. He also prophesied of the future of his family. (2 Ne 1-4)
*Adam gathered all his righteous posterity in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman and gave Patriarchal blessings and prophesied. (Doc. & Cov. 107: 53-57)
*Alma counseled and/or chastised his sons Helaman, Corianton, and Shiblon. (Alma 39 - 42)
The Lord is not pleased when we fail to counsel our children:
Eli, from the Old Testament, served as a high priest, and his sons were priests serving in the temple. They forcibly took the flesh of the sacrificial animals before the fat was burned at the altar. They also seduced the women who gathered outside the tabernacle. (1 Samuel 2:12-22)
The Old Testament Gospel Doctrine manual says, "After reprimanding his sons, Eli did nothing further to correct the terrible sins in his family and at the tabernacle. As a result, a man of God came and chastised him, telling him that he honored his sons more than God." (1 Samuel 2:27-29)
Clearly the Lord requires us to continue to counsel with our adult children.
